On Saturday, November 6th, don't forget to set your clocks back an hour for daylight savings. I don't know about you, but I always forget to change my clocks until I wake up in the morning. I remember well the days that I thought I overslept and rushed around frantically only to figure out that I now had an extra hour.
I saw a public service announcement (PSA) reminding me to replace my batteries in my smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector when I switched my clocks. I thought about it and figured this would be the year I remember to do that since I normally wait until the detector starts beeping at me to change its battery. I'll be proactive and change out the battery no matter how much life it might still have. After the PSA reminded me to change my batteries every year, it then said I should change the detectors every five years. What? I have never heard of replacing a functioning smoke detector because it had an expiration date. After I picked my jaw off the floor, I shouldn't have been surprised when the sponsor was a major smoke detector supplier. Just another way to improve their company's profits.
Oh well, I'm still going to change my batteries but I think I'll hang on to the detector.
