Don't let foreclosed homes ruin your neighborhood

Foreclosures aren't going away anytime soon, so we must learn how to deal with them when one happens to be located in our own neighborhood.  It's not only the concern that a foreclosure will drag down home values, but safety issues should be a priority to you and your neighbors.  In a depressed economy, more people are desperate for shelter.  As a Realtor, we are aware of the signs to look for when we suspect a house has been broken into or to be on the lookout for squatters. Neighbors need to learn to be vigilant about this as well.  If you're unsure of a situation, don't take a risk to your personal safety, call the sheriff. If there's water running from the property, call the water company.  If the property is listed with a real estate agent, call them. The point is, take action!
